Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho reveals why he is 'disappointed' in Andreas Pereira for choosing to join Valencia on loan

Jose Mourinho is "disappointed" in Andreas Pereira for choosing to join Valencia on loan rather than fight for his Manchester United place.

Pereira committed his future to United by signing a new two-year contract last week after sealing a season-long move to the La Liga club on the last day of the Spanish transfer window.

Belgium-born Pereira has been at Old Trafford since the age of 16 and made 13 appearances for the first team. He was also loaned out last year, scoring five times in 35 league games for Spanish club Granada.

Mourinho has revealed United have the option to recall Pereira in January, but admitted he did not want the 21-year-old midfielder to leave Old Trafford in the first place.

"Andreas' (loan) was a personal decision, a decision I don't agree with, what I don't think is best for him," Mourinho said.

"A decision that disappoints me a bit because he has the potential to be here fighting for his position, fighting for opportunities, to be a Manchester United player.

"His decision can be considered as a young player who wants to play every weekend but also a young player that is not ready to fight for something difficult and it is difficult to play in Manchester United's midfield.

"You have to be ready to fight for your position and I am a little disappointed. But OK, it was his decision, he has a long-term contract, we have an option to bring him back on January 1 so we have that situation under control, it is not a drama."
