West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini has withdrawn from Argentina's squad for their World Cup qualifiers with a knee injury.

Lanzini missed West Ham's first two Premier League matches of the new campaign after picking up the knock in pre-season but he did return for Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle as a second-half substitute.

He was set to be involved in Argentina's matches away at Uruguay on Friday followed by the home game against Venezuela next Wednesday.

The 24-year-old's international career has only just got underway. He made his debut against Brazil in June and then earned his first start under Jorge Sampaoli as Argentina thrashed Singapore 6-0.

Previous to that, Lanzini was named in Argentina's provisional 35-man squad for the 2016 Olympics in Rio but again it was a knee injury that forced him to pull out and he returned to West Ham for treatment.
