Miguel Britos was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Anthony Knockaert

Watford defender Miguel Britos has issued a public apology for his horror tackle on Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert.

Britos was shown a straight red card in the 24th minute of the 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road on Saturday for a reckless two-footed lunge on Knockaert.

It was Britos' fourth red card in less than two years at Watford and the 32-year-old admitted there were "no excuses" for the challenge made.

"I would like to publicly apologise for my red card on Saturday," he told the club's website.

"It was not my intention to hurt the Brighton player, and I am happy he was okay and able to carry on playing the match.

"My timing was wrong but there are no excuses and I was very sad when I was in the dressing room.

He added: "I have experienced the highs and lows in the two matches at Vicarage Road this season and this is football.
