Roy Hodgson says he is close to agreeing a deal to succeed Frank de Boer as Crystal Palace manager.
The former England head coach spoke to Sky Sports News after meeting the Palace hierarchy on Tuesday and said he is close to taking the job but has not signed a contract.
De Boer was sacked on Monday after Palace recorded their fourth loss in their opening four games with a 1-0 defeat to Burnley on Super Sunday.
Asked if a deal was close, Hodgson said: "I hope it's close. It's a great opportunity to return to the game I love, at the highest level, and also at a club I always admired, liked and supported as well.
"It's a good day for me, I'm very happy and looking forward to hopefully getting down to work and trying to help us get some points in the league and climb up the table."
Palace are yet to record a point or score a goal after four games and Hodgson, who has been out of management since resigning as England manager after they were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland, believes the side are capable of staying in the Premier League despite their poor start.
"At the moment I'm not prepared to talk about the squad. I haven't met them yet or started working with them yet," he said.
"They did very well last season, especially towards the end of the season, so I've got no reason to believe they can't do it again. I shall be in tomorrow."
The 70-year-old said he did have sympathy for De Boer, who lasted just 77 days at Selhurst Park.
"I've always got sympathy for managers who lose their job. It's a fact of life and it's not my business, it's the business of the club," he said.
"I'm pleased that they've turned to me and allowed me to take the job on.
Asked if any contract to take over had been signed, he said: "Not yet."
