Chelsea are in talks with Monaco over a deal for Radamel Falcao, Sky sources understand.
Jose Mourinho said on Thursday he would love to help Falcao "reach his level again" after the striker scored just four goals during a season-long loan at Manchester United.
And, according to Sky sources, discussions between Chelsea and Monaco are ongoing.
Manchester United opted not to take up the option to sign the striker on a permanent basis but with at least one new striker on the summer wanted list at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho has hinted that he would relish the chance to bring the player to London.
"If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it," Mourinho told DirecTV Sports.
"It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.
"He played in Spain and Portugal and I know him very well because I was in Portugal and Spain. In Spain we were together when he was at Atletico and I was at Real and I know him very, very well... he is a great player."
Asked whether the deal is close to being finalised, Mourinho said: "I have no idea. I don't do the negotiations, I just tell my board..my club, the players that I am interested in, the price, what I like. And we will see what happens.
"But, whether at Chelsea or at another club, I would like very much for his guy to be able to show the English people what they don't know about him."
Mourinho also dismissed reports that Juan Cuadrado will leave Chelsea after just six months, saying: "Cuadrado is not going anywhere this summer."
The winger started just four Premier League matches after joining from Fiorentina in January and there was speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge with Inter Milan and Roma linked with the player.
But Mourinho said: "People don't know Cuadrado yet, I have seen him many times when we were both in Italy, me at Inter and him at Udinese."
"Because of that I have a lot of hopes for him for next season. I hope in the Copa America he can regain his self-esteem, his ego and that he has that joy of playing."
Sky Italia report that Cuadrado would like to go back to Italy and Roma and Inter could try to secure his signature.
Another Chelsea player linked with a summer transfer is left-back Filipe Luis, who started just nine Premier League games in his first season since joining from Atletico Madrid.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone said this week he would welcome back the Brazilian, but it is understood Chelsea want to recoup the fee they paid a year ago.
