Mesut Ozil apologises for 'frustrating' Arsenal loss against Liverpool

Mesut Ozil issued an apology to Arsenal fans on social media on Sunday after the Gunners' humiliating 4-0 loss at Liverpool.

Ozil was one of many Arsenal players who were criticised for a lack of effort at Anfield, as the visitors endured a drubbing that sparked renewed outrage among a fan base who grew increasingly disillusioned with the team last season.

And the German took the unusual step of issuing an apology on Instagram.

"Blame us, shout at us, criticize us, but I'm also very disappointed about today's game," Ozil wrote.

"We wanted to achieve a positive result before the international break but we were simply not good enough during the 90 minutes and Liverpool deserved the win without a doubt.

"Usually I'm too angry to post on social media after such frustrating days like today, but I don't want to let this match go uncommented before traveling to the DFB Team.

"Nevertheless... Gunners, I'm sorry -- especially for the fans who travelled all the way up to Liverpool to see us fighting. But we will try everything to improve in the next game and bounce back from the disappointment we are all feeling at the moment."

Ozil will join up with Germany on the international break, which gives Arsenal fans two weeks to seethe over this game.

Alexis Sanchez, whose future remains the subject of speculation going into the final week of the transfer window, also posted a photo on Instagram after the game -- showing him in a pose of disappointment on the pitch after one of Liverpool's goals.
