Manchester United win Watford thriller as Tottenham Hotspur slump at Leicester

A brilliant solo goal by Jesse Lingard sealed a 4-2 win for Manchester United in a dramatic game at Watford.

United seemed to have things wrapped up after just over half an hour, with Ashley Young scoring two superb goals against his former club and Anthony Martial adding a third.

Young opened the scoring by smashing home Lingard's 19th-minute pass, and made it 2-0 six minutes later with a 25-yard free kick before Martial struck.

Watford produced a stirring response and got back into the game through a penalty from Troy Deeney and a crisp first-time finish from Abdoulaye Doucoure after the break.

But within seconds of Doucoure's strike, Lingard picked up possession deep in his own half and waltzed away from Watford challenges before sliding a cool finish past Heurelho Gomes.

However, United -- who closed the gap on neighbours Manchester City to five points for the time being -- suffered an apparent injury blow when Nemanja Matic limped off and was replaced by Ander Herrera after 55 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of returning to the Premier League's top four were dashed as they lost 2-1 at Leicester, who rose to ninth in the table thanks to great finishes from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.

Leicester were rapidly out of the blocks, and with 13 minutes played they had a deserved lead when Vardy scored his 100th league goal in style with a delicate lob over Hugo Lloris from Marc Albrighton's fine cross.

Spurs came close through Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen as they looked for a way back but, in first-half stoppage time, they were two down as Mahrez drifted in from the right to give Lloris no chance with a brilliant curling effort.

The visitors were struggling to find a way through as the clock ticked towards the final quarter of an hour, but that changed with 11 minutes to go when Erik Lamela, in his first game in 13 months, found Kane and the striker blasted past Kasper Schmeichel.

As Leicester dropped deeper into defence, Serge Aurier's cross should have been finished off by substitute Fernando Llorente -- but he slammed over from close range.

A Jonny Evans own goal ended Newcastle United's poor run as they came back from 2-0 down to take a point in a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Home forward Salomon Rondon's looping effort from 30 yards clipped the angle of post and bar, and just before the break the hosts were ahead as Kieran Gibbs' cross was headed home by Hal Robson-Kanu.

They doubled that advantage when Sam Field scored his first Premier League goal after 56 minutes, but just three minutes later Newcastle had one back when Ciaran Clark took advantage of poor marking to head home from a corner.

And seven minutes from the end, West Brom's defenders got in a muddle from a Newcastle free kick and the ball flew in off Evans.

Brighton's first Premier League meeting with arch-rivals Crystal Palace ended in a 0-0 stalemate at the Amex.

In a great atmosphere, Brighton winger Jose Izquierdo saw his strike cannon to safety off defender James Tomkins, but it was the visitors who created the first moment of real threat when home keeper Mat Ryan denied both Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha with a superb double save.

Lewis Dunk headed straight at Palace keeper Wayne Hennessy, and in a tense game of few openings, the defender posed another threat after the break when his flick from a corner zipped past the post.

With 10 minutes to play, Palace broke and Zaha fired wide before Brighton came closer still when ex-Palace striker Glenn Murray's header was cleared off the line by Andros Townsend.
