Man United rescue late point vs. Burnley; Chelsea, Spurs win

Jesse Lingard scored two second-half goals as Manchester United fought back to earn an unlikely 2-2 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford.

Burnley had looked good value for the points after going into the break two goals up courtesy of Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour.

Jose Mourinho, who had complained about unfavourable scheduling over the Christmas break, rotated his side, giving Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luke Shaw starts, but the changes did not have the desired effect.

Mourinho moved midfielder Nemanja Matic into defence after half-time in an effort to turn the game back in United's favour and it did the trick.

Lingard, after missing a brilliant opportunity from close range, scored a back heel to give United a fighting chance.

Sam Vokes scored a third for Burnley but it was ruled out for offside, before Lingard struck at the death to earn United a point and avoid defeat.

Alvaro Morata scored on his return to the Chelsea team following suspension as Brighton were beaten 2-0.

Chelsea struggled to break down a defensive Brighton side during the first half, although Tiemoue Bakayoko wasted a glorious opportunity to open the scoring on 19 minutes.

But Morata headed home from a Cesar Azpilicueta cross seconds after the break to break the deadlock.

Marcos Alonso headed in from a Cesc Fabregas corner on 60 minutes to complete the win, which put Chelsea level on points with second-placed United.

Harry Kane stole the headlines as Tottenham ran out 5-2 winners against Southampton at Wembley.

Kane scored a hat trick to break Alan Shearer's record for Premier League goals in a year and moved ahead of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for the most goals for club and country by any player in Europe's major leagues in 2017.

The England striker had Spurs two goals up at half-time before early goals after the break from Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min ended the game as a contest.

Sofiane Boufal pulled one back for the visitors before Kane completed his hat trick and Dusan Tadic scored a consolation goal for Saints.

Liverpool ran riot over Premier League bottom club Swansea City with Roberto Firmino scoring twice in the second half of a 5-0 win at Anfield on Boxing Day.

Jurgen Klopp's team was back on the field for the first time since surrendering a two-goal lead to Arsenal in a match that ended 3-3 on Dec. 23.

And Philippe Coutinho wasted no time helping his team forget their latest defensive meltdown, smashing a right-footed shot from a Mohamed Salah pass into the top right corner of goal inside of 10 minutes.

Firmino scored at the back post to start the second half before Trent Alexander-Arnold added another and the Brazil international struck again to make it 4-0.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain piled on with a fifth for the hosts as Liverpool stayed one point ahead of Tottenham in the table and Swansea remained bottom.

West Ham were denied by a controversial late goal as they drew 3-3 at fellow strugglers Bournemouth.

James Collins headed in from an Aaron Cresswell corner to put the visitors ahead on seven minutes, but Dan Gosling had Bournemouth level just before the half-hour mark with only their 10th home goal of the season and Nathan Ake looked to have completed the turnaround on 57 minutes, sweeping home Lewis Cook's cross

West Ham fought back as Marko Arnautovic scored twice in the closing stages to give David Moyes' side a lead heading into added time.

But Bournemouth were given a late equaliser when the officials allowed a goal from Ake's header, despite it appearing to strike Callum Wilson's arm in an offside position.

Stoke fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield as they continued their climb away from the bottom of the division.

Huddersfield thought they were on course for a third win in four games after Tom Ince's 10th minute goal.

Stoke fought back and had chances through Xherdan Shaqiri and Peter Crouch without finding a breakthrough, while home goalkeeper Jonas Lossl also played his part, producing fine saves to deny Ryan Shawcross and Eric Choupo-Moting.

However, Stoke broke through and got their reward when Ramadan Sobhi scored for the second game in a row to rescue a point.

Watford came from behind to beat Leicester 2-1 and end a run of six games without victory.

Riyad Mahrez's saw Leicester go ahead in the 37th minute but the hosts rallied and could have been in front at the break.

Molla Wague scored on the stroke of half-time and Richarlison struck the woodwork.

Watford sealed victory in the 65th minute courtesy of a Kasper Schmeichel own goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure's effort.

In the other game Sam Allardyce extended his unbeaten start at Everton with a 0-0 draw at West Brom.

However, that result means West Brom are now without a win in 18 Premier League games and moored in the bottom three.
