Nemanja Matic: Premier League the 'main target' for Manchester United

SKOPJE, Macedonia -- Nemanja Matic is confident Manchester United will perform well in the Premier League despite their Super Cup setback against Real Madrid.

United lost 2-1 to Madrid in Skopje in a game the reigning European champions dominated for large spells.

Jose Mourinho's side begin their domestic campaign against West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday and Matic, who impressed on his competitive debut following his move from Chelsea, says United are in good shape to challenge for their "main target" in the Premier League.

He said: "We have to rest well because we have a very important game on Sunday against West Ham. It's the start of the Premier League and it's very important for us.

"As you know the Premier League is the main target. There is a lot of games, it's a long season but I expect us to do well."

Mourinho accepted, after losing his third Super Cup, that Real Madrid had been the better team in the Philip II Arena.

But after goals from Casemiro and Isco, United fought back in the final 20 minutes and might have snatched an equaliser through substitute Marcus Rashford.

It gave Matic encouragement the gap between the two teams is not that big.

He added: "I think we played everything so we don't lose this game. We played against a very good side. Very experienced.

"They know how to play these games. We are not happy that we lost but did everything. We had an opportunity to equalise, Marcus had a good chance and didn't score, unluckily for us, but this is football."
