Scott McTominay is going to be a 'big star' for Man United - Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic has offered to help make Scott McTominay a Manchester United "star."

McTominay, 20, made his first Champions League start, alongside Matic, in the 2-0 win over Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

It was the midfielder's sixth appearance for the first team after breaking into Jose Mourinho's United squad at the end of last season.

Matic said after the Benfica win that he had been impressed with McTominay's performance against the Portuguese side, and he has now offered to mentor the youngster to help him reach the top.

He told MUTV: "I think Scott is going to be a great player and already is a great player.

"He's very young, very talented and physically strong. I'm sure he is the future of Manchester United and I enjoy playing with him because he also works really hard and is very confident.

"I'm going to help him in training because I think with his potential he's going to be a big star for Manchester United."

McTominay has been given his chance after injuries to Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini, with the pair likely to be sidelined again when United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

McTominay is set to return to the bench with Ander Herrera coming back into the team after he was only named among the substitutes against Benfica.
