Mourinho will not meet Man United fans to discuss his criticism of them

MANCHESTER -- Jose Mourinho has declined an invitation to meet Manchester United fans to discuss his concerns about their support but insists he will continue to act in the best interests of the club.

Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) offered to meet Mourinho after he criticised some sections of the fanbase.

He has admitted to being "disappointed" with a perceived lack of support for striker Romelu Lukaku and has questioned the atmosphere at Old Trafford both this season and last, but the 54-year-old insists it is not feasible to sit down with fans to talk through his grievances.

He said: "I cannot meet... how many millions? I cannot meet a quarter of the planet, I think a quarter of the planet is Manchester United red, I cannot meet them.

"The only thing I can do is to do what I do since day one, which is to fight for the club, to give everything I have to give, to try to give everything I can get in terms of support to my players because we are fighting hard, we are working hard and that's the only thing we can do and the only thing we can promise."

MUST have been in discussions with United about ways to improve the atmosphere at home games.

A singing section between the Sir Alex Ferguson stand and east stand has been in place since 2014.

However, Mourinho's comments about a lack for support for Lukaku during the 1-0 win over Tottenham have perplexed some supporters.

The Belgium international hit the post with a header and set up Anthony Martial to score the winner and it came as a surprise to many fans that Mourinho felt the 24-year-old had been singled out for criticism.
