Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea v Everton

Paul Merson looks ahead to Chelsea's clash with Everton at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday

Paul Merson is tipping Chelsea to edge to a 2-1 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Blues head into the game fresh from having picked up their first Premier League points of the season thanks to their 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley last weekend.

Antonio Conte’s men bounced back against Spurs after having lost their opening Premier League game of the season 3-2 to Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

Everton, meanwhile, head into the game on the back of their credible 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday night, and after having reached the group stage of the Europa League.

However, former Arsenal star Merson is tipping Chelsea to claim all three points on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over the Toffees in west London.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Everton were fantastic on Monday until, weirdly, City were reduced to 10 men, after which they were hanging on.

“With a Europa League tie against Hadjuk Split on Thursday bound to take a lot of Everton, I see Chelsea following their impressive win at Spurs with another victory, although I expect it to be close.”

Chelsea are looking to defend their Premier League title this season after their impressive Premier League triumph under Antonio Conte last term, as they secured a return to the Champions League.

The west London side will take on Atletico Madrid, Roma and Qarabag in the group stage of the Champions League next month after the draw was made in Monaco on Thursday.
