Phil Neville reacts to Chelsea’s 3-0 loss at Roma

The Man United legend reacts to Chelsea's humiliating 3-0 loss to AS Roma in the Italian capital on Wednesday night

Phil Neville was critical of Chelsea’s poor defending after the Premier League title holders lost 3-0 to AS Roma on Tuesday night.

The English title holders made the trip to the Italian capital following a 3-3 draw with the Serie A giants in their last Champions League fixture at Stamford Bridge.

Eden Hazard helped to inspire a Chelsea comeback on that occasion but the Belgium international was powerless to prevent the Blues enduring an embracing evening in Rome.

The 26-year-old had a chance to break the deadlock inside 20 seconds but Roma went down the other end of the pitch and made the breakthrough thanks to Stephan El Shaarawy’s stunning opener.

Chelsea were 2-0 down in the 36th minute after El Shaarawy doubled his tally for the night to leave the visitors contemplating a first Champions League defeat of the season.

Antonio Conte’s side have conceded 11 times in 10 games in the Premier League this term and Chelsea’s defence looked ragged as Diego Perotti added a third in the 63rd minute.

Former AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger allowed the ball to run through to Thibaut Courtois only for Perotti to intercept the pass and finish past the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Ex-Manchester United defender Neville was critical of Chelsea’s poor defending at the Stadio Olimpico.

“Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard are outside of the box! You’re not going to score!” Neville told BBC Sport.

“I can’t believe what I am seeing from Chelsea tonight. They are getting an absolute mauling tonight!

“The defenders have been shocking! This is not the Chelsea side we saw last season. They look all over the place now.”
