Craig Shakespeare's side now face the prospect of paying Silva's wages in full but not being able to play him until January.

Leicester signed the 28-year-old on deadline day as a last minute replacement for Danny Drinkwater who left for Chelsea in a £35m deal.

The club are still locked in negotiations with both Sporting and Fifa to try and push through the transfer.

A spokesman for Leicester said: "We are working with Adrien and Sporting Clube de Portugal to overcome some issues relating to the player's registration and exploring all options to find a resolution."

Silva had spent his entire career with the Portuguese club before flying to England to complete his move to Leicester on deadline day.

He returned to the Sporting's training ground on Monday following his international duty to say farewell to his former team-mates.

Leicester City endured a tough summer in the transfer market, but boss Craig Shakespeare has managed to bring in a new number of new faces.

Kelechi Iheanacho from Manchester City marks the record signing of the summer, which set Leicester City back £24.9m.

However, the Foxes have also offloaded a number of players – including Drinkwater, Tom Lawrence, Ron-Robert Zieler, Bartosz Kapustka and Nampalys Mendy.
