Manchester City scout Robert Lewandowski as he scores double in Bayern Munich win

Pep Guardiola sends talent spotters to keep an eye on Polish striker as they plot a January swoop

MANCHESTER CITY had scouts watching Robert Lewandowski as he scored twice in Bayern Munich's 4-0 demolition of Mainz.

The Polish striker publicly criticised the club's transfer policy this summer after chiefs refused to compete with moneybags Paris Saint-Germain.

And City boss Pep Guardiola is ready to capitalise on the situation as he keeps tabs on Lewandowski, with a January swoop on the cards.

He has scored five times in four matches this season despite speculation about his future.

Lewandowski would spark a bidding war between Europe's top clubs should he become available.

And City could benefit from the hitman's relationship with Guardiola after he thrived in the Spaniard's title-winning side.

Bayern were knocked out in the last-eight of the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti, with Lewandowski keen to go all the way.

Real Madrid - the Polish international's boyhood club - would provide the best opportunity to meet his ambition.

But despite being strongly linked with the 29-year-old in the past, Los Blancos' policy of avoiding players over the age of 30 could go against Lewandowski.

City have not struggled for goals this season, with Sergio Aguero leading the scoring charts on five strikes after his hat-trick against Watford.

Gabriel Jesus - Guardiola's preferred option was also on target in the win over the Hornets to move to four for the season, one behind his team-mate and Romelu Lukaku.

Their last two Premier League matches have been a 5-0 demolition of Liverpool at home and the 6-0 steamrolling of Watford at Vicarage Road.

Sandwiched in between those two league encounters was the 4-0 away hammering of Dutch giants Feyenoord.
