Atletico Madrid 2 Sevilla 0: Diego Costa watches Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco score in impressive win – days before Champions League clash against Chelsea

Diego Simeone's side could emerge as European contenders when £67m striker is allowed to register in January

CHELSEA will be lucky to get anything more than Diego Costa's transfer fee out of Atletico Madrid Wednesday.

Even without £67million Costa, who was watching from the stands after completing his medical this morning, the Blues will be facing a formidable outfit.

The home side started off sluggishly in the first-half, and struggled to create any chances of note in only their second ever match at the brand-new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

However, they may have just been feeling their opponents out because, they took the lead immediately after the break.

Steven N'Zonzi's underhit backpass was snatched up by Yannick Carrasco, who showed great composure to keep his balance after rounding the goalkeeper and cooly slot into an empty net.

After that, Atletico took control of the contest.

One area Chelsea could find some joy in is down the Rojiblancos' right-side, with Sevilla getting in behind full-back Sime Vrsaljko on more than one occasion.

Atleti were grateful to captain Gabi for a perfectly-timed last-ditch tackle to deny Luis Muriel, who had used his pace to beat the Croatian to the ball.

Vrsaljko will not fancy coming up against Eden Hazard, if the Belgian is deemed fit enough by Antonio Conte, on Wednesday night.

Atletico wrapped up the points on 69 minutes with Antoine Griezmann putting the ball past Sevilla stopper Sergio Rico from the angle after being played in by Filipe Luis.

And Simeone showed where his priorities lie as he replaced the Frenchman with midfielder Thomas Partey just three minutes later.

As well as the Atletico players, Chelsea will have to contend with the passionate Rojiblancos fans who are ready to create an incredible atmosphere in the stadium's first match under the lights.
