Alan Shearer, Faustino Asprilla and Rob Lee rejoice as Mike Ashley puts Newcastle up for sale
Three Toon legends were among the fans celebrating the prospect of new ownership at St James' Park
THREE former Newcastle players have made their feelings perfectly clear about Mike Ashley's decision to put the club up for sale.
After a decade in charge of the Magpies, he has decided to put the club on the market. Again.
Toon icon Alan Shearer has supported the push for a new owner and he is evidently happy about the prospect of a new owner at St James' Park.
Shearer, who scored a remarkable 206 times for the Magpies, tweeted a hilarious GIF captioned "Just heard...".
The 47-year-old even stepped in as a makeshift manager in 2009, but he failed to guide them away from relegation to the Championship.
Former Newcastle midfielder Rob Lee also joined in with the online battering of Mike Ashley, with yet another ecstatic response.
He tweeted a GIF of a man dancing, captioned "At last."
Faustino Asprilla, who joined Toon in 1996, also quoted Newcastle's statement and with the caption, "Praise the lord."
Ashley has tried to sell up in 2008 and 2009, but both times he changed his mind shortly after.
He put them up for sale in September 2008 after Kevin Keegan resigned as manager, only to take them off the market in December.
Newcastle latest news
And after they were relegated to the Championship in May of 2009 he again announced his intention to sell, only taking the club back off the market five months later.
A hoard of fans could not contain jubilation when the news was announced, with one fan even labelling it a 'Christmas miracle'.
