Manchester United closing in on move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes

Jose Mourinho's side are planning a flurry of transfer action in January as they look to claw back ground on Manchester City

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly close to bringing Portuguese man Andre Gomes to Old Trafford in January.

The 24-year-old was on Jose Mourinho's wishlist in the summer but a deal wasn't pushed through.

According to Don Balon, United are interested again in signing Gomes with a reported fee of £31million enough to seal the deal.

Superstar agent Jorge Mendes is trying to push through a move after the midfielder's unsuccessful spell at the Camp Nou.

Gomes moved to Barcelona from Valencia in 2016, and since then has made 38 appearances for the Catalans, scoring three goals.

He has been displaced from the starting XI this season with the arrival of Brazilian Paulinho - who is now a mainstay in the Barca midfield.

How many new stars must Manchester United sign?

Jose Mourinho recently claimed that United haven't spent enough money to keep up with their Manchester rivals who are running away with the title.

The difference between the first and second placed sides is an astronomical 15 points after just 20 league games.

Since the Portuguese manager's move to Manchester, he has spent £300m on players such as Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

Mourinho will be eyeing Gomes, as well as a plethora of other players to attempt to plug that gap.

"Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers. When you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club."
