Both Chelsea and United have sent scouts to watch the defender in action, according to ESPN.

The two top flight giants are also reported to have made enquiries ahead of the January transfer window.

Matheson has been named in Rochdale's previous two matchday squads and he is expected to feature for the first-team over the next 18 months.

But the League One side will be doing their utmost to keep the exciting young prospect at Spotland Stadium.

However, the 14-year-old would expect to receive a hefty pay rise if he was to sign a deal with a club in the top flight.
