Krul was originally keen on moving to Vicarage Road after calling time on his brief loan spell at Ajax.

After a number of hours at the Hornet’s training ground, Krul decided enough was enough and he boarded an EasyJet flight to Schipol in the Netherlands.

AZ couldn’t believe their luck when the veteran turned up for talks and a deal was quickly thrashed out, leaving Watford empty-handed.

It was an unwelcome end to a fairly productive window for Mazzarri, who signed the likes of Mauro Zarate, Tom Cleverley and M’Baye Niang on loan.

Watford also pocketed £20million from Odion Ighalo’s late move to China and will be kicking themselves they failed to bring in a new shot-stopper.
