But Mourinho said it was good to lose and that he didn't want his team to go unbeaten on their tour.

He told MUTV: "The defeat is good. It's very important to lose a match in pre-season.

"It would have been very bad for us to leave the US without a defeat with the teams we've played.

"We were good and in the second half we defended much better.

"It's one thing to defend against Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar and another thing to defend against three good players.

“The attitude was very good, the defending in the second half was better. Phil Jones and Eric Bailly pressed really high, we got into dangerous positions, and we could have scored.

"We did really good things and really bad things."

United's loss on Wednesday ended their five-game tour of the United States.

Mourinho's men beat MLS sides LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake before victories over Euro rivals Man City and Real Madrid.

The Red Devils return to Manchester before their trip to Norway to play Valerenga on Sunday.
