MARK CLATTENBURG'S voice was a major talking point during the Arsenal vs Chelsea Community Shield clash.

As BT Sport's studio referee gave his thoughts on some of the officiating during the first half, Twitter went into meltdown with people expressing surprise at how he sounded.

One West Ham fan wrote that he was "dying" after hearing the former Premier League official talk, while Joe Lawson wrote: "What is wrong with your voice Clattenburg?"

Many wrote that they didn't think his voice "matches his appearance", while Oscar Cusack wrote that "The world never needed to find out what Mark Clattenburg's voice sounds like".

Another wrote that he believed Clattenburg "has had cosmetic surgery and a voice box change".

Jason added that it reminded him of "the first time you record yourself", while Jordan wrote that he has been "completely thrown off course by Clattenburg's accent".

Joe Shark wrote that his voice reminded him of "Michael the Geordie from Alan Partridge", while Lee Price said that he expected "one of the best referees we've had" to have a "more asserting voice".

Others wrote that his voice "sounded strange", while Reece wrote that he "never expected that voice to come out of Clattenburg's mouth".

 

Another wrote that he "sounded like Joe McElderry".

The 42-year-old was born in Consett, County Durham before going on to become one of the world's elite referees.

He retired in February this year, saying that he had decided to take up a position with Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
