GYLFI SIGURDSSON’S dragging transfer saga is frustrating Swansea boss Paul Clement who needs to plan for replacements for the Everton target.

The Iceland playmaker has been the subject of a £40million bid from the Toffees but the Welsh club has dug in their heels and demanded £50m for their star man.

The midfielder was axed for the classy 4-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday and Clement could not stop himself from having a dig at the absent set-piece specialist.

Ahead of their opening Premier League fixture with Southampton, Clement said: “With each day that goes by you get a bit more frustrated, you don’t know if you have the player and if you can get in targets that you want.

“We are in a critical stage and we hope it is resolved quickly.

“We have to make sure that if a player of his ability leaves, we have to get one or two very good players.

“It is not just a matter of getting two players who sit on the bench, we want quality. They have a value, they are not cheap.

“The big thing about getting the right calculation is we can spend that money on good quality players. If he stays, we have a very good player already.”

Clement and Sigurdsson left it late to rescue the club from relegation last season but the boss does not want to waste any more precious time on a want-away player.

The former Real Madrid coach wants both parties to compromise to get the deal over the line and free up his time and funds to focus on the south Wales side.

He said: “When you have a player who is contracted for three more years and there are other clubs interested in a very good player - and that has happened here before - we have a valuation of the player, as do the other club, and at the moment they have not met but at some point the objective is they will be met.

“There likely needs to be a compromise on both sides and that is normally how a deal is made.

“But we have a number of weeks to go and I don't anticipate it going to the end of the window.

“I hope it will be resolved quickly, that would be best for everyone, maybe it will happen when we don’t expect it.

“But the main point is it has not changed my focus on working with the players, including Gylfi, they have all been focused and worked hard and we are in good shape.”
