Usain Bolt targets football career after quitting athletics – but might settle for League One rather than Manchester United

Sprint icon is set to train with Borussia Dortmund and play for his Old Trafford heroes against Barcelona in a legends game

USAIN BOLT believes he can swap one dream for another - by becoming a professional footballer.

And the sprint legend might be prepared to accept League One or League Two rather than his beloved Manchester United.

Bolt, 30, quit athletics after winning 19 global titles but only bronze in the World Championships' 100m at London 2017.

The Jamaican, who pulled up injured in the 4x100m relay on Saturday,  said: “I’ve always said that I wanted to play football because it’s something I think I’ll be good at.

“But right now, after pulling my hamstring, I’m not really worried about that at this moment.”

Bolt's agent Ricky Simms has also  told the Daily Star: “If you ask him he will want to play football and because he has said that we have had a dozen clubs who would like him to go for a trial with them.

“I don’t want to name names but he will go to Dortmund because the CEO of Puma, who is a good friend of ours, is on the board at Borussia Dortmund. He will go to train with them.

“Can a sprinter who is 30-years-old play in the Bundesliga or the Premier League? Realistically that is a step too far.

"I think if he had six months or nine months playing and training with a team then he could play at some level whether that is League One or League Two."

Before all that, Bolt hopes to be fit in time to play in a legends match for United against Barcelona at Old Trafford on September 2.

That would certainly show if he can become a blocks-to-box performer.

But Simms added: “He would hit me on the head for saying he is not going to play in the Champions League.

"But I don’t know realistically if he has the motivation at this stage of his life to go training with the reserves on a rainy day in Manchester or Munich or somewhere as he is a wealthy guy and has a great life.

“With football though, in some form you will see him.”

United's world record buy Paul Pogba has previously claimed, perhaps not altogether seriously, that he hopes Bolt signs for Jose Mourinho's Premier League title-chasers.

And, although such a recruit would be the biggest surprise of Mourinho's colourful sareer,  it would probably eclipse the money-spinning shirt sales of superstars like Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
