And that after a summer of debate as to whether it was time for the England winger to move on.

Champions Chelsea seemed very keen for a while. And Manchester United and Liverpool both made enquiries.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is yet to agree a new contract with the Gunners. His current deal running until the end of the season.

But Wenger reaffirmed his admiration for the former Southampton player when he said:

"I rate him highly and he's one of the players who is on his way up.

"In the last year, he has made huge progress and I want him to stay here for a long time.

"I'm convinced he will be the English player that everybody will look at in the next two years."

Goal had previously claimed the Gunners were stunned by Oxlade-Chamberlain’s salary demands and are not prepared to sanction a new £150,000-a-week contract.

But it seems Wenger can see a way through that problem in inviting the The Ox, who cost £12million from Saints in 2011, to stay.

It has to be said, though, that Oxlade-Chamberlain has had a chequered career at the Emirates.

He has only started 66 Premier League games, having been named on the bench 64 times.

Along with that record The Ox has nine top flight goals and another 11 in 47 starts in other competitions.
