But Celtic have moved quickly to secure the future of the 25-year-old midfielder on a two-year deal.

Initial talks had stalled, with Armstrong attracted interest from several clubs including Prem sides including Swans and Southampton.

The news will come as a relief to boss Brendan Rodgers, who had called out the player’s representatives earlier this week over a lack of progress in negotiations.

Rodgers also stated that he believed the player’s performances were suffering due to the saga.

Swansea will now turn their attentions elsewhere, having been linked with a move for West Brom winger Nacer Chadli, as they look to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Celtic said in a statement: “Celtic are delighted to announced that Stuart Armstrong has signed a new-two year contract that will see him remain at the club until at least the summer of 2019.

Armstrong – who came on as a substitute during the Hoops’ 5-0 win over Astana – insists he is now looking to bring the fans even more success.

He said: “I am delighted to sign this new contract with Celtic. I have had a tremendous time at the Club so far and it has been a period in my footballing career which I have enjoyed immensely.

“It has been an honour to play for a Club of such stature. I have enjoyed a great relationship with our supporters and we have achieved a high level of success, something it has been great to be part of.

“I’m pleased that this new contract has been agreed and I am now looking forward very much to working with the manager, our staff and my team-mates to bring the club and our fans even more success.”
