Sean Dyche would rather take Wells for less or negotiate a deal that would start at a lower price and rise on appearances.

Wells has not played this season after having an operation to get a screw removed from an old ankle injury.

There are questions about when he will be fit to start for Burnley and that is a factor in the negotiations.

Burnley turned to Wells after failing to agree a fee with Lorient for forward Majeed Waris.

They offered less than the £10m demanded.

Huddersfield may be willing to drop their valuation on Wells slightly in the next 24 hours to speed the move along.

Dyche has already splashed out a club-record £15m for Chris Wood from Leeds.

The 25-year-old bagged an impressive 44 goals in 88 appearances for the Championship outfit since his arrival from Leicester in July 2015.

And he began to repay his fee as he bagged a late equaliser for the Clarets against Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday.

The move came after Andre Gray was flogged to Watford in a £18.5m deal.
