JACK COLBACK could be on his way back to the Championship, as Rafa Benitez looks to ignite a Newcastle fire sale ahead of the transfer deadline.

Colback controversially joined Newcastle from Sunderland in 2014 after playing 115 games for the Black Cats.

But he has been deemed surplus to requirements by Toon boss Benitez and could be loaned to Hull City.

The 27-year-old could be flogged, along with the likes of Tim Krul, Achraf Lazaar, Yasin Ben El-Mhanni and Henri Saivet, according to the Evening Chronicle.

Grant Hanley is another name set for the exit and he could be left out of Newcastle's Premier League squad list entirely if he does not find a new club, after moving from Blackburn for £5.5million a year ago.

Norwich are keen on bringing in Scotland international Hanley though, after conceding 12 goals in five games this season so far.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley is keen to balance the books and reduce the club's wage bill this summer, promising Benitez that is the way to get the signings he wants.

But it may all have come too late in the window, with the Telegraph reporting the club have struggled to find buyers for some of their stars at asking price.

Benitez is keen to sign Liverpool duo Divock Origi and Danny Ings, but was rebuffed with an initial bid by the Reds.

The Toon have endured a difficult start to their return to the Premier League, before a confidence-boosting 3-0 win over West Ham at St James' Park, leaving the club 14th in the table.
