KNOCKED CENTRE-BACK

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rejects £20m bid from Leicester for defender Calum Chambers

Gunners and England centre-back looked destined for the Emirates scrapheap but he has turned it around over the summer

ARSENAL have rejected two bids for Calum Chambers – up to £20million – from Leicester City, according to reports.

The centre-back looked a cert for the Emirates exit after tumbling down the first-team pecking order under Arsene Wenger.

Perhaps the club’s miserable defending in two defeats to Stoke and Liverpool have convinced Wenger he needs to change his backline as the Foxes have been snubbed with two bids.

The BBC claim Chambers was told at the end of last season that he was surplus to requirements and free to leave.

But the England youngster's career has taken a positive U-turn and his future remains with the Gunners.

Chambers impressed on loan at Middlesbrough last season where the problem for the goal-shy relegated side was at the other end of the pitch.

Crystal Palace were reported to have made a £16m bid for the England under-21 international but that too was rebuffed.

Chambers was signed from Southampton for £16m in 2014 and made 36 appearances in his first season at the Emirates.

And, when Virgil van Dijk looked like leaving the Saints this summer, Chambers was linked with a return to St Mary’s.

But when Wenger decided to flog Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Paulista to Valencia for just £10m it signalled a chance for Chambers to earn his spot in the first team back.

Just before his Boro loan last summer, Wenger tipped his prospect to be a star, once he played more games

He said: “He has gone to Middlesbrough for the season and it is vital for him to play.

"I personally think he will be a great centre-back.”
