Liverpool appeared to be front runners for the French attacker before Arsenal then appeared to have gazumped them.

Arsene Wenger has been chasing the star all summer but his last-ditch £92million arrived too late to get a deal over the line.

That did not stop him ruling out a move before 11pm, as he said post-match: "For the moment I am Monegasque."

Lemar wasted no time crying over his failure to secure a switch to England as he showed his admirers exactly what he is capable of for his country against Holland.

And it must have been painful viewing for Gunners boss Wenger as he watched from the stands at the Stade de France as the ace fired in a brace during the 4-0 victory for the hosts.

But it was Lemar's first goal and France's second that had everybody in meltdown and he produced a rocket to double his side's advantage.

But he instead finished the day by netting a brace for France - and the first was a belter

He unleashed a left foot piledriver on the volley from 20 yards straight into the top corner to leave the French supports delighted.

And it wasn't just those in attendance who loved it - here's the best of what Twitter had to say:

France regained control of its World Cup destiny with the comfortable 4-0 win against the Netherlands in Group A, putting the Dutch almost out of contention and moving Les Bleus three points clear of Sweden after it lost 3-2 at Bulgaria.

Antoine Griezmann's 17th international goal put them on their way in the first half, and Monaco attacking midfielder Lemar's first two international goals after the break secured victory against a shoddy Dutch side short on invention and lacking in composure.

Just hours after sealing a loan move from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain, 18-year-old star Kylian Mbappe came off the bench to score the fourth in a breathtaking cameo. It was his first international goal and taken with the confidence and poise of a seasoned striker.
