Jose Mourinho wants to build a legacy at Manchester United and fans should not worry about his contract situation

Old Trafford manager amazingly claimed he was not thinking of extending his deal at the club beyond summer of 2019

JOSE MOURINHO has made history at Manchester United.

He became the first ever Old Trafford manager to win silverware in his first season with a League Cup and Europa League double, pushing to one side any claims he was past it after a dismal final season as Chelsea manager.

And right now, United fans are loving life under the Portuguese boss.

But how long will Mourinho be United’s manager for?

He’s built up a reputation for not staying at a club for any longer than three years, and with Jose indicating he isn’t thinking about extending his contract at the moment, should fans be worried about him leaving?

I don’t think so, not at all.

Mourinho is a man driven by his own ego and successes.

It’s been the engine behind him steering multiple clubs to Champions League glory and to his sides winning the league in England, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

As a manager, Mourinho is a force of nature and he’s striving for nothing but success at United, something he achieved in his debut season with a cup double and the two trophies he wants, the ones fans crave - the Premier League and Champions League - are next on his list.

He’s a man whose whole make-up is fuelled by winning. It’s not a habit for Mourinho, it’s a lifestyle.

Anything else isn’t good enough and that winning mentality is something he’s feeding back into the veins of United, something we’ve desperately needed since David Moyes and Louis van Gaal did their best to erode it.

But the reason I am confident about Mourinho is staying has nothing to do with his hunger for silverware, it’s all to do with his ego and one major thing missing from his CV.

Mourinho and his desire to build a legacy, a dynasty, is what will keep him at United for more than three years.

He’s won everything he can as a domestic manager.

He’s conquered Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

He’s taken minnows Porto to the top of European football and given Inter Milan the only treble in their history.

Mourinho's achievements as a manager are almost unparalleled, so what drives a man like that?

What he doesn’t have is a legacy like Sir Alex Ferguson and that is what will drive Mourinho to stay at United for longer than three years.

The Portuguese will want to build a sustained period of success at United; it was impossible at Chelsea and Real Madrid thanks to Roman Abramovich and Florentino Perez respectfully and Italy was never a place where Mourinho would settle down.

England is where his passion lies and United is where his heart has been, even before he took over.

He wouldn’t have returned to Chelsea for a second stint had the United job been available to him then but now he’s got it.

He’s building the foundations for his own dynasty in Manchester and the club is taking great strides towards re-establishing itself as a Premier League powerhouse.

Next up, a step back into the Champions League and that’s very exciting for fans.

So long as that desire to win trophies still burns brightly in Mourinho, United will be in no rush to let him go either.

He suits our needs as a manager just as much as the club suits his needs for the legacy he craves and Jose will love nothing more than the idea of being held in the same regard as Sir Alex by United fans in the future.

That is what is driving him, that’s what was fundamental in his desire to become United manager in the first place and that’s what will keep him here for years to come.
