New boss Luciano Spalletti appears to have transformed San Siro giants into title challengers with perfect start
IVAN PERISIC proved just why he was so heavily courted by Jose Mourinho with a stunning volley as Inter Milan overcame Serie A newboys Spal.
The Croatian is believed to have been the fourth player the Manchester United boss wanted to sign this summer but the two clubs couldn't agree a deal — and he signed a new contract at the San Siro.
And Mourinho's loss is clearly Inter's gain.
After two wins from two — including an impressive 3-1 victory away at rivals Roma — many were beginning to take Luciano Spalletti's men seriously.
However, they started off sluggishly against the Serie A debutants and it was soon clear this wouldn't be the walk in the park many had anticipated.
The opener came on 27 minutes, but not without a touch of controversy.
Joao Mario was running into the box and was brought down.
The referee immediately blew his whistle — but to the surprise of everyone in the stadium and watching on TV, he pointed to the edge of the box.

He then backtracked and opted to consult the pesky VAR system.
After a staggering three minutes, he was forced to run to a camera and watch the incident himself — for another 60 seconds.
Before eventually awarding a penalty which every player was anticipating.
And Mauro Icardi coolly slotted away.
Spal grew into the match as the second goal wouldn't come for Inter, and came close to scoring a famous goal.
However, they were finally put to bed by a touch of brilliance from Perisic three minutes from time.
D'Ambrosio clipped over a delightful ball and the 28-year-old caught it brilliantly on the edge of the box — the volley it past Alfted Gomis in the Spal goal.
