Chelsea escape FA punishment for anti-Semitic Alvaro Morata chant as club threaten to ban fans who took part singing it

Handful of Blues supporters took part in a song that was abusive towards Jews during the club's 2-1 win over Leicester

CHELSEA are set to escape FA punishment for an anti-Semitic chant sung by Blues fans regarding Alvaro Morata.

A handful of the Blues' 3,000 travelling supporters took part in a song that was abusive towards Jews during the club's 2-1 win over Leicester on Saturday.

The chant - which used new-signing and scorer on the day Morata as part of the lyrics - was aimed at London rivals Tottenham, who famously have a large Jewish following.

However, the Football Association will NOT take action against Chelsea... but will be looking to punish any individuals seen to be taking part in the chant.

Following the incident, Chelsea head of communications Steve Atkins said: "The club and the players appreciate the fans' passionate support away from home, of course.

"But the language in that song is not acceptable at all.

"We've spoken to Alvaro after the game and he does not want to be connected to that song in any way and both the player and the club request that the supporters stop singing that song with immediate effect.

"Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discrimination abhorrent and the language that was used in that song the other night we find totally unacceptable.

"There is no grey area. That language used was anti-Semitic. We have a zero tolerance policy towards it.

"If there is evidence that season ticket holders or members took part in that, and take part in it in the future, then we will take the strongest possible action against them, which includes bans."

After the game, Morata tweeted: "Since I arrived, I have been able to feel your support every single day, you are amazing and I'd like to ask you to please respect everyone!"

Meanwhile, a statement from Kick It Out read: "There is no place for such disgusting chants at football matches and in wider society.

"Kick It Out welcomes the clear statement by Chelsea FC, deploring the chants and asking all supporters to cease repeating the chant.

"The organisation expects Chelsea FC to ban any supporters who are identified as indulging in such abusive conduct and expects the police to take action against any identified perpetrators."

Chelsea have been caught up in other race storms in recent years, including the Paris Metro incident in February 2015 and singing an anti-Semitic song to Tottenham fans before their FA Cup semi-final in April.
