ROY HODGSON made a nightmare start to his Crystal Palace career after his side crashed behind less than six minutes into his reign.

Hodgson was hoping his team made a strong opening to the clash with Southampton after taking over from Frank De Boer in charge at Selhurst Park.

But the former England boss was left cursing in the sixth minute when Saints took the lead to stun the home crowd.

The Palace defence looked all over the place as they failed to clear the lines properly and Steven Davis was on hand to steer the ball home.

It was exactly the start Hodgson was looking to avoid with his side without a point and having failed to score any league goals this season.

And it also gave plenty of ammunition to his critics who lined up on Twitter to mock the 70-year-old.

Palace believe the appointment of Hodgson is the perfect choice to steady the ship and ensure they are not embroiled in a relegation battle this season.

The experiment with De Boer was intended to see the side change their style to a more attacking side, but it led largely to confusion among the players over what they were being asked to do.

It was felt Hodgson, with his reputation for being able to turn out organised and solid teams, would erase the defensive weaknesses that have plagued their early season.

But whatever work had been done on the training ground over the past few days was quickly forgotten as Saints carved the Palace back line open to take the lead.
