Terriers chairman Dean Hoyle has decided to make the bold move and the club informed the boys and their families last week.

The Yorkshire club have decided to downgrade their academy from category two status to category four.

They will keep Under-23 and Under-18 squads and look to reinvest the £500,000 saved in running costs.

With huge focus on teams up and down the country looking to produce home grown talent, the timing of the decision will raise a few eyebrows.

The Terriers will not be entitled to any compensation fee if any released players join other clubs.

Promising kids Rocco Fragapane and Raj Mahmood both earned England Under 16 call-ups but now United academy chief Nicky Butt has invited them to Carrington for a closer look.

Harvey Rowe and Sam Murray are in at United already and are being pursued by City, Liverpool and Everton.

City failed with a £250,000 bid for Jordan Williams last summer - the England Under-17 international is currently on loan at League One Bury.

Goalkeeper Ryan Schofield, 17, helped England win this summer's Toulon tournament by saving in the penalty shootout in the final and was promoted to Huddersfield's senior squad this summer.
