Police intervene in Leeds win over Burnley to decide which end Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out should be held

POLICE officers intervened to decide which end the penalty shoot-out would be held in the Carabao Cup tie between Burnley and Leeds.

The third round tie at Turf Moor went all the way to penalties after neither side could find a winner after extra-time with the scores tied at 2-2.

Whenever a match is forced to go to a shoot-out, the ref will toss a coin with the two captains to determine which end of the ground will be used.

But before referee Darren Bond was able to get the captains together, he received a visit on the pitch by a senior policeman on duty at the game.

And it appears the police ordered Bond the spot-kicks had to be taken in front of the Burnley supporters rather than at the end of the ground occupied by the Leeds fans.

Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen could be seen voicing his frustrations at what was happening, fearing the advantage was being given to the Premier League side.

Even Clarets manager Sean Dyche checked out to see what was happening as Bond followed the police advice to use the Burnley end without a toss taking place.

But the Championship leaders refused to let the decision spoil their concentration as they converted all of their five attempts from 12-yards.

And when goalkeeper Andy Lonergan denied James Tarkowski that was the deciding factor and Leeds secured the victory to put them in the draw for the fourth round.

Leeds boss Christiansen said: “Before I came here I knew about Leeds, I’ve followed English football since I was a kid and I knew Leeds were a big team.

“They are a team who should be in the Premier League. This is what we are going to work on, day by day, one game at a time. We’ll do our best to achieve that this season.

“This was a tough game, 120 minutes of high intensity, and a very good opponent from the Premier League who have been doing well.

"But we came here with the intention to win and to pass to the next round.”
