But the £30million signing has been key during their impressive start to the season — and both parties are confident they can find an agreement, despite negotiations taking longer than expected.

Boss Guardiola waited until the end of last season before deciding the fate of a clutch of out-of-contract stars, including Yaya Toure, Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta.

But he has no plans to do the same with Fernandinho and would like to sort out his situation in the coming weeks.

Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Gabriel Jesus are also in line for new, improved deals at City.

They are all expected to be done, although Etihad sources say there is no urgency to get any of them over the line quickly.

Belgian midfielder De Bruyne was hailed as one of the best players in the world following a sensational week.

He was instrumental as the Premier League title favourites followed up a 5-0 win over Liverpool by demolishing Feyenoord 4-0 — and then hitting Watford for six.

And a new long-term deal could see him increase his £150,000-a-week by £50,000.

Jesus could also see a similar bump up from his £70,000-a-week deal after firing in the goals alongside Sergio Aguero.
