United are confident the 26-year-old whose current deal expires in 2019 will agree to stay on under current boss Jose Mourinho.

De Gea joined United under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and has developed into one the world’s elite keepers and recently reached the landmark of 100 clean sheets for the club after the beating Everton 4-0 at OId Trafford.

But he has constantly been linked with a return to Spain with Real Madrid and would have been in between the sticks at the Bernabeu had it not been for that infamous faulty fax machine in the summer of 2015.

Since then, the club have been much more bullish on their position arguably the best keeper in the world is not for sale with a feeling around the club De Gea is enjoying life in Manchester and working with Mourinho.

United reaffirmed their stance in the summer, insisting De Gea who has won the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup was going nowhere.

He said: "I can guarantee that he’s not going this season, that I can, and my feeling is it will be very difficult for him to go. Because he’s a very honest boy, very straight.

“He was contacted for a long time [by Real].

“The club was close, then we open because I always have this feeling of when a player has a desire to go I don’t like to stop players to go because in the end you don’t get what you expect from them if they want to move and they don’t.

“I don’t think the feeling from him [towards Real] is very good.
“I see him very happy and focused and working better than ever so for me 100% he stays with us.”

News of a new deal for the Spaniard underlines the SunSport exclusive reporting the keeper is planning on sticking around long-term by moving into a plush new pad down the road from the house he sold earlier this year.

Sergio Romero signed a new contract in the summer but is firmly established as Mourinho’s No.2 and the Special One is keen for his first choice goalkeeper to follow suit as soon as possible.

De Gea clocked up another shut out at St Mary's as United beat Southampton by a single Romelu Lukaku goal to keep pace with local rivals Manchester City at the top of the table.
