Former England striker was furious after appearing to be elbowed in the eye by Bournemouth's Simon Francis

WAYNE ROONEY arrived at training with a black eye after leaving Everton's win over Bournemouth with blood streaming down his face.

The dramatic incident was the latest in a fraught few weeks for the 31-year-old.

Rooney was furious at appearing to be elbowed in the face by Cherries defender Simon Francis and was taken off in the second half.

Francis had gone up for a header against Rooney and his arm seemed to connect with his opponent's face, but it did not seem deliberate.

He had to have treatment from Everton's medical staff on the touchline and was then let back on to the pitch before the wound re-opened.

The former Manchester United striker was annoyed that referee Martin Atkinson did not punish Francis.

His words turned the air blue - so much so that Match of the Day had to blur out his mouth as he complained.

The incident occurred towards the end of the first half but after treatment during the break, it didd not do the job as the wound re-opened.

Rooney was taken off after 55 minutes for Omar Niasse, who went on to score both Everton goals after Josh King had given Eddie Howe's side the lead.

Ronald Koeman said: "It is his arm. It is not really with intention but yes it is above his eye and [the wound] is totally open.

"The doctor said to me at half-time if it happened again we would need to change him, I changed him because we needed something different."
