He is now in line to face Mexico, Chile and Iraq in the first round, which is based in the city of Kolkata.

Gomes is the cousin of former Manchester United winger Nani.

And while he has already represented England at youth level, but he could also choose to represent Portugal - like Nani - and Angola, because of his father.

It is most likely that he will remain with the Three Lions, though, as he has come through the ranks with England and has been given big responsibility at St George's Park.

The FA's chiefs might be counting their blessings in the future that Gomes' dad Gil was in the UK when his son was born, though, because he would not be eligible otherwise.

Gomes scored after four minutes and provided two assists in the Young Lions' 8-1 victory over Germany in October of 2016 in the Croatia Cup.

Gomes – born in London on 31 August 2000 when his Portuguese dad, Gil, was playing for Hendon – joined United at 13 and has constantly played above his age group.

Indeed, he made his debut in the Under 18s at just 14 and two years later hit a hat-trick off the bench against Everton.

He also captained England’s Under 17s and celebrated his 16th birthday all in the same week.

He turned 17 on August 31 and won the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award on Thursday.

Gomes made history at the end of last season by becoming United's youngest-ever Premier League player.
