But his time in the Spanish capital has been marred with a string of injuries meaning he has struggled to find consistency in Madrid's star-studded team.

According to Marca, Bale has missed out on 66 matches with ankle issues, groin strains, illness and thigh injuries.

Last season the 28-year-old started just 17 league matches as fans grew frustrated with his lack of form on the pitch.

Bale is yet again sidelined with a calf injury which is forcing him to sit out of Wales' crucial World Cup qualifying double header against Georgia and Republic of Ireland.

It will come as a huge blow for manager Chris Coleman with his side two matches away from qualifying for next year's tournament in Russia.

If Wales fail to beat Georgia, they will need to beat Ireland but if they win their first clash, a draw against Martin O'Neill's side will be enough.

Bale will be watching his team from the treatment table which will also rule him out of a huge game against former club Tottenham.

The two giants go up against each other on October 17 in their Champions League fixture before Spurs host Zinedine Zidane's men on November 1.
