Toby Alderweireld gives Tottenham boost after admitting he is happy at club despite not signing new deal

Star wants to be handed improved deal by Spurs but talks are yet to begin, with a number of teams interested

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD insists he has no issue playing for Tottenham despite their failure to hand him a new contract.

The centre-back made it clear in September that he wants to be handed an improved deal after becoming Spurs’ key man in defence.

Alderweireld’s agent has also claimed he could look to leave the north Londoners next summer, with a number of elite European teams interested.

The Belgium international has since held talks with boss Mauricio Pochettino.

But negotiations are yet to get underway, leaving Alderweireld’s long-term future in doubt.

However, the 28-year-old is adamant he’s happy at Tottenham for now and is waiting to see what the future has in store regarding a new contract.

Alderweireld told Sky Sports: “I had a good conversation with the manager. I told him I’m focused on football, to keep my game up and help the team.

“That’s all I can do. You can see I’m happy there, and I try to help the team, and that’s the way I always play football.

“[A contract offer?] No, like I said, I am focused on football. The rest, I don’t know, we will see about that.”

Alderweireld also praised team-mate and compatriot Jan Vertonghen, who is set to become Belgium’s most-capped player in history, adding: “We’ll be very proud of him if he achieves this. It will be a great honour. Hopefully we can celebrate it.”
