United are second in Premier League to Manchester City only by goal difference and expectation is rising about thier first serious title challenge since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson

Mourinho’s men are on 19 points, the same as locals rivals Manchester City, with pundits and fans believing they can mount their first serious title challenge since Sir Alex Ferguson signed off by winning the Premier League in 2013.

Last season United won their opening three games, but were outclassed by City at home, were never in the title shake up and finished sixth.

And the Special One has been quick to remind the United faithful and experts there is a long way to go in the title race.

Mourinho told Portuguese newspaper Record: “Nothing has happened yet, last year it started harder and it turned out really well.

“This year it has started really well, but we do not know how it's going to end.

“In another championship, this would mean almost the title, but in England it means nothing.”

United's title credentials will be under heavy scrutiny after the international break when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.

That is followed by a trip to Premier League new boys Huddersfield, then United face Spurs at Old Trafford and then go to Chelsea five days after a Champions League game at Benfica.

The 54-year-old has been taking time out to look back on his coaching career and feels he is better now because he has learnt to control his emotions.

He added: “I am a better coach today than I was before because I have a different control of my emotions.

“I face difficulties with more maturity and that means I can keep my feet on the ground.”
