Tottenham transfer news: Spurs join rivals Arsenal in the hunt to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka

The German international only has one year left on his deal with the Bundesliga side and has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners

TOTTENHAM have joined Arsenal in the race to lure away Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has just one year left on his deal at the Veltins-Arena, and is widely expected to move on from the Bundesliga side next summer.

According to the Mirror, the two North London club's will go head-to-head for the German internationals signature.

They report that Spurs' recruitment side have stepped up their interest in the Confederations Cup winner.

Mauricio Pochettino has sent scouts to watch Goretzka in action in almost all of Schalke's games in the past month, and have been impressed by the towering central-midfielder.

The Royal Blues' sporting director Christian Heidel recently conceded defeat in the hope of tying him down to a new contract.

He said: "We have done everything possible. We can't do anything else.

"We are trying to convince him, also financially. We are trying to look for the best way to convince him to stay, but without putting pressure on him."

They may look to sell him in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer, as a host of European club's monitor his progress.

Jurgen Klopp is believed to have identified Goretzka as a possible replacement for Emre Can, who looks destined to leave Liverpool when his own deal expires at the end of the season.

While it has been reported that the player himself would prefer a move to Bayern Munich or Barcelona.

Goretzka announced himself to fans worldwide when he netted four times in this summers Confederations Cup, where the four-time World Cup champions romped to victory.

He has scored four times in nine games for Schalke this season as his stellar reputation continues to grow.
