Cazorla, 32, tweeted: “Due to some discomfort in the tendon over the last few days, I have had to return to the operating theatre.

"This will delay my return to the pitch but I maintain my enthusiasm and motivation to once again enjoy my great passion, football."

Spain international Cazorla has been out of action for over a year, undergoing surgeries that resulted in him losing eight centimetres from the tendon in his right foot.

In an interview with Marca earlier this month, the Gunners ace explained how doctors came close to amputation after he contracted a potentially life-threatening infection.

"He saw that I had a tremendous infection, that I had damaged part of the calcaneus bone and ate the Achilles tendon, I was 8 centimetres missing!"

Asked about his maestro's injury, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said: "It is the worst injury I have seen.

"It started with a pain in the Achilles and it has gone from worse to worse and I must say I know how much Santi loves to play football and loves to be out there every day and I feel very sorry for what happened to him, because it is unbelievable.

"I saw him one month ago, he was here, and I told him to prepare as well as he can."
