Arsenal and Man City would qualify for Fifa’s new Super Clubs World Cup — but Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all miss out
New plans for a global club tournament in 2021 are taking shape, and here's a little explanation on how it would work
ARSENAL and Manchester City would currently be England's only representatives in Fifa's new 'Super' Clubs World Cup, were the tournament to take place right now.
Football's governing body is still working on a competition which will replace the Confederations Cup from 2021.
It is part of Fifa's plan to increase the global appeal of the game — with a larger tournament for the biggest clubs worldwide to compete in.
Marca claim that, while the format is not yet complete, small details are filtering through.
It would be a 20-day long tournament and take place every four years, exactly 12 months before a World Cup.
There would be 12 sides from Europe competing, and they would be made up of the previous four Champions League winners, the past four losing finalists and top four Uefa coefficient-ranked club.
Although, the likelihood is that it will usually just be the top 12 Uefa ranked sides on the continent.
It means that, as things stand, City and Arsenal would be the only English representatives had the inaugural competition been this summer.
Real Madrid have won two of the past three Champions League campaigns, with Barcelona claiming the other title — while Atletico Madrid and Juventus have taken it in turns to lose the finals.
They make up four of the top five places and with Bayern Munich in fourth and Paris Saint-Germain next in sixth.
