Jonny Evans wanted by Arsenal and Manchester City as West Brom captain is lined up for big-money January move
Northern Ireland centre-back targeted by Arsene Wenger as Gunners boss looks to strengthen his defence this winter
ARSENAL have reportedly joined Manchester City in the race to sign West Brom star Jonny Evans.
The Mirror claims Arsene Wenger has thrown his hat in the ring for the centre-back this January as he looks to strengthen his defence.
However, the Frenchman faces stiff competition from City for Evans’ signature, with Pep Guardiola trying and failing to bring the ex-Manchester United ace to the Etihad last summer.
Arsenal also missed out on Evans despite bidding £25million in August.
But the 29-year-old is believed to be keen on leaving The Hawthorns after boss Tony Pulis was axed ten days ago.
Evans’ current contract runs until 2019, and the Baggies were preparing to hand him a new deal following his ascent to the captaincy.

New gaffer Alan Pardew is keen to see Evans stay after taking charge this week.
But he admits he needs to hear the player himself say the magic words.

Pardew explained: “I think the assurance I need is probably from Jonny more than anybody, and I haven’t met him yet.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him. I think he’s a fabulous player and very important for the club, so I will have a good old discussion with him.”
