Manchester United equal club record by going 40th straight home game unbeaten at Old Trafford

Win over CSKA Moscow helped them hit 40 and level their own 51-year record – but they now have to beat rivals Man City

MANCHESTER UNITED have equalled a club record by going a 40th successive game unbeaten.

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford netted as Manchester United grabbed a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

It booked them top spot in Champions League group A - and also landed drew Jose Mourinho's side level with a 51-year-old club record.

Manchester City were the last side to inflict a defeat on United, with Kevin De Bruyne inspiring them to a 2-1 win in September of last year.

And that gives added significance the the this Sunday's Premier League clash - when rivals City are the visitors for a Manchester derby clash.

Something will have to give, with City chasing a  record 14th straight Prem win which would take them clear past Arsenal and Chelsea's back-to-back winning runs from 2001/02 and 2016/17 respectively.

When the statistic was put to Mourinho, he said: "I don't play for records.

While Mourinho's current run includes all competitions, he also turned Stamford Bridge into a fortress during in his time at Chelsea.

Sunderland ended a 77-game unbeaten run in the Premier League when they triumphed in 2013.

He had won 61 of those games, drawing 16.

The Black Cats were just the third club club to beat Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in 116 games after Barcelona (2006) and Basel (2013).
