He had hoped the Red Devils would let him leave on loan for six-months after talks with boss Jorge Sampaoli over his international future.

Romero signed a new United deal earlier this year and is happy at the club, but wants to keep sharp ahead of a big summer ahead.

But Mourinho is reluctant to let him leave, and is adamant he will stay and be back-up to David De Gea.

An Old Trafford source said: “Jose does not want to let Sergio leave next month after his worries over the World Cup.

“His agent Mino Raiola was hoping for a favour by letting him get regular football somewhere for a bit.

“He loves it here and it is only the Argentina issue that is wanting him to just move on for a little while.

“The thing is Jose isn't in the mood to do anyone any favours at present and Sergio knew the score this season.”

Romero had a huge part to play in United winning the Europa League last season, his only regular playing time.

He has made just four appearances so far this campaign though, in the EFL Cup and Champions League.

The stopper joined the Red Devils in 2015 on a free transfer, and he has gone on to play just six times for the club in the Premier League.
