SAM ALLARDYCE turned in a decent impression of Scrooge to put the squeeze on Chelsea and continue his unbeaten start as Toffees chief.
Allardyce’s Everton produced a superb stonewall display to hold out despite being under almost constant pressure and make it six without defeat since Big Sam took over.
Yet really Chelsea will be kicking themselves after dominating from start to finish, yet failing to find a way through.
And all that against an Everton team missing in-form Wayne Rooney, who pulled out hours before kick off after being taken ill.
How they missed him, too, as Everton – apart from the briefest of spells – simply couldn’t get near the ball.
It was a miracle Chelsea weren’t out of sight by the break. It was truly astonishing they ended the game drawing a blank.
The guts and graft of Phil Jagielka had plenty to do with that, though, as twice within ten first half seconds Jagielka threw himself to block on the line.
First he was on the spot to deny Timoue Bakayoko, and bounced up to do likewise when Willian prodded the rebound goalward.
To be fair, for all Chelsea dominated, Jordan Pickford was hardly over-worked – and when he was called on, he proved more than capable.
Like when Pedro lashed in an angled left footer which the Toffees keeper instinctively turned over.
He reacted smartly when Marco Alonso drilled in a low effort two minutes after the break, while Ashley Williams followed Jagielka’s lead and blocked another from Pedro.
Williams was thrown on at half time as Allardyce shifted formations to try and get a foothold, Sandro Ramirez also appearing to give Dominic Calvert-Lewin some up top back-up.
It made little difference, as Chelsea continued to run the show – although when Williams stuck out his head and turned Victor Moses’ cross against his own bar and over, you sensed it just wasn’t meant to be for Chelsea.
